What Do Building Safety Captains Do?
Building Safety Captains are trained to assess emergency and day-to-day safety situations. View the list of objectives and roles of Building Coordinators and Building Safety Captain roles. They provide guidance and assistance during incidents such as:
- Fire and tornado drills
- Critical incidents and emergencies
- Shelter-in-Place procedures
- Other safety-related events
They are knowledgeable about their building’s layout, evacuation routes, and designated assembly areas, and they are prepared to assist individuals—including those with disabilities—in safely exiting or sheltering in place when needed. They also know how to use fire extinguishers and access emergency supplies and equipment.
You can identify a Building Safety Captain by their safety vest. During any emergency, they have the authority to issue safety instructions and manage the building and surrounding area until emergency personnel arrive. All individuals in the building must follow their directions.
In buildings that do not currently have a Building Safety Captain, occupants should refer to the Emergency Procedures Manual, available in each building. If possible, a nearby Safety Captain may respond once their own building is secure, but the manual will serve as the primary guidance in such situations.
Additional Responsibilities
In addition to emergency response, Building Safety Captains are also responsible for:
- Ensuring new employees are familiar with emergency procedures
- Reporting hazards or suspicious activity to Campus Police and Public Safety, Facility Services, or Safety Compliance
Chain of Command
Building Safety Captains operate under the authority of the Safety Officer in accordance with the National Incident Command System. In the Safety Officer’s absence, authority is transferred to the 97É«Íø Chief of Police. Captains are empowered to take immediate action when necessary to prevent or stop unsafe acts.
