This course is intended for students with high-intermediate/advanced academic level of English language proficiency and will focus on specific grammar points in standard American English which are often more difficult for a non-native English speaker to master. The course intends to help students target the most common errors in business writing. Students will explore/observe grammar in the context of the workplace, formulate rules, watch videos, participate in discussions, and complete tasks and projects. Quizzes and other types of assessments will be used to measure progress and learning.

This comprehensive course will help you learn to speak US English clearly and accurately, which will have a significant impact on successful communication at work from informal conversations with coworkers to formal presentations. All aspects of pronunciation are covered, including production and discrimination of consonants and vowels as well as other important aspects of English pronunciation such as stress, rhythm and intonation. Students are encouraged to set individualized goals for focused study throughout the semester.

Business English Part I is the first of two courses intended for students with an intermediate/high-intermediate level of academic English language proficiency. This integrated skills content-based language course aims to help students in or preparing for work who need to improve their communicative ability when socializing, telephoning, presenting, taking part in meetings and negotiating. Various aspects of business English will be covered, including (but not limited to) statistical graphs, measurements, social language, meetings and presentations. Also, in the course, there is an introduction to business letters - enquiries, ordering, confirmations, etc. This is an asynchronous course with OPTIONAL meeting times.

This course is designed to enhance interpersonal skills for the workplace. Emphasis is placed on dealing with conflict, improving conversational and listening skills, and identifying nonverbal cues in an intercultural setting. Upon completion, students should be able to apply basic communication techniques to enhance relationships and manage conflict situations in a variety of workplace settings.

The media (often seen as "mass media") are at the forefront of culture and politics, and even education, in 2019 and beyond. Moreover, the media have undergone and continue to undergo major changes in format, purpose and impact. Thus, it is essential to acquire "media literacy": understanding of the past, present and future of the media's role and influence in our lives. To make the subject even more compelling, media language and discourse can differ significantly from the expository communications we use in education and business. Then, too, there is the challenge of propaganda and "fake news," which calls us to bring new critical thinking efforts to our media consumption. Finally, we must also consider some ways we can enhance our perception and understanding of these different formats' languages and messages. (Take, for example, the "newspeak" of social media: spelling and grammar changes, emojis, memes, GIFs, and many more.) Through the textbook Media, Society, Culture and You (Mark Poepsel, Rebus Community 2018) and through our own direct exploration of the various media--from the older "legacy" media to the new internet-social media--we will study how their various forms of discourse can be understood in terms of sender, message, channel, audience and effect. During our term together we will have multi-media lessons as well as guest speakers and field trips. Finally, through vocabulary, grammar, reading (both verbal and visual), writing and listening-speaking activities, and critical thinking exercises, we will improve our ability to understand the media messages themselves and acquire not only media literacy, but also media fluency.

Manicurist I is the first of two courses in the Manicurist program and will cover subjects such as performing a basic manicure and pedicure (including shaping nails, removing cuticles, and polishing nails), infection control, professional image, bacteriology, nail structure, and nail diseases and disorders. Completion of both courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in manicuring or in a related field.

Manicurist II is the second of two courses in the Manicurist program and will cover subjects such as applying artificial nails such as acrylic and gel nails, infection control, anatomy and physiology, electricity and business. Students will be able to apply their new skills by working on clients in the student salon clinic. Completion of both courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in manicuring or in a related field.

Esthetician I is the first of two courses in the Esthetician program and will cover subjects such as skincare, hair removal, lash lift, brow lamination, infection control in the beauty industry, skin physiology, anatomy, and microbiology. Completion of both courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired through completion of both courses will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in esthetics or in a related field.

Esthetician II is a continuation of Esthetician I. Students will learn Electrotherapy, Facials with LED Light Therapy, Advanced Treatments, Professional Development and Makeup Application. and will have an opportunity to become certified in Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels. Students will apply their knowledge and skill set from information learned in the Esthetician I course and obtain practical experience on live clients in the student clinic.

Natural Hair Care Specialist I is the first of two courses in the Natural Hair Care Specialist program and will cover subjects such as how to care for natural hair without the use of chemicals such as perms/relaxers and hair color, style techniques (including braiding, twisting, wrapping, extending and locking natural hair), infection control, professional image, bacteriology, hair structure, and hair/scalp diseases and disorders. Completion of both courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in Natural Hair Care or in a related field.

Natural Hair Care Specialist II is the second course in a two-course program and will cover subjects such as how to care for natural hair without the use of chemicals such as perms/relaxers and hair color, the style techniques of sew-ins, wigs and locs, infection control, business, electricity, and anatomy and physiology. The students will be able to apply their skills to clients who visit the student salon clinic. Completion of both courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in Natural Hair Care or in a related field.

Cosmetology I is the first of four courses in the Cosmetology program and will cover subjects such as infection control, professional image, bacteriology, shampooing & conditioning, and hairstyling. Students will be introduced to the student salon clinic. Completion of all courses in the program will educate students in the theoretical and practical skills, the safety precautions and measures, and the proper infection control and disinfection procedures. The proficiencies acquired will prepare the student to achieve licensure in the state of North Carolina and obtain an entry-level position in cosmetology or in a related field. This course introduces the development of iOS applications and Apple applications using Swift programming language. Emphasis is placed on syntax, object-oriented principles, memory management, and functional concepts of Swift programming. Upon completion, students should be able to develop fully functional iOS and Apple applications using Swift programming language.

This course introduces computer programming using the Python programming language. Emphasis is placed on common algorithms and programming principles utilizing the standard library distributed with Python. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test, and debug Python language programs.

This course introduces computer programming using the C++ programming language with object-oriented programming principles. Emphasis is placed on event-driven programming methods, including creating and manipulating objects, classes, and using object-oriented tools such as the class debugger. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test and debug at a beginning level.

This course introduces computer programming using the JAVA programming language with object-oriented programming principles. Emphasis is placed on event-driven programming methods, including creating and manipulating objects, classes, and using object-oriented tools such as the class debugger. Upon completion students should be able to design, code, test, debug JAVA language programs.

This course introduces the fundamentals of SAS programming. Emphasis is placed on learning basic SAS commands and statements for solving a variety of data processing applications. Upon completion, students should be able to use SAS data and procedure steps to create SAS data sets, do statistical analysis, and general customized reports.

This course introduces computer programming using the C# programming language with object-oriented programming principles. Emphasis is placed on event-driven programming methods, including creating and manipulating objects, classes, and using object-oriented tools such as the class debugger. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test, debug, and implement objects using the appropriate environment at the beginning level.

This course introduces the data structures and algorithms frequently used in programming applications. Topics include lists, stacks, queues, dequeues, heaps, sorting, searching, mathematical operations, recursion, encryption, random numbers, algorithm testing, and standards. Upon completion, students should be able to design data structures and implement algorithms to solve various problems.

This course is a continuation of CSC 151 using the JAVA programming language with object-oriented programming principles. Emphasis is placed on event-driven programming methods, including creating and manipulating objects, classes, and using object-oriented tools such as the class debugger. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test, debug, and implement objects using the appropriate environment.

This course is a continuation of CSC 153 using the C, programming language with object-oriented programming principles. Emphasis is placed on event-driven programming methods, including creating and manipulating objects, classes, and using object-oriented tools such as the class debugger. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test, debug, and implement objects using the appropriate environment.

Students will learn to use the programming language Python in STEM related areas. The course provides an introduction to the Python Programming language and focuses on Python libraries used to solve problems/projects in STEM area. The following topics will be covered: an introduction to the Numerical Math - NumPy, Numerical Methods - SciPy, Plotting - Mathlotlib, Symbolic Math, and Data Handling - Pandas libraries. Examples and applications will be in the STEM area. Python is one of the easiest programming languages to learn and it is the main language of Data Science. The course does not prepare students for a certification exam in Python but gives a very good foundation to prepare yourself to take the exam in the future. Participants should have high school math background. Participants need to have a flash drive. No prior programming skills needed.

This course provides hands-on and guided experience in Data Science using the Python programming language. Topics include data wrangling, data exploration, data visualization, SQL, and introduction to machine learning including case explorations. Familiarity with Python programming is required; equivalent to successful completion of a first semester Python programming course.

This course will cover all aspects of collaborative mural making and will result in a permanent mural on 97É«Íø's campus. The class will include best practices in community engagement, analog and digital tools, collaborative design composition, and installation processes.

This course uses the curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. It is designed for persons with little or no riding experience; however, participants must be able to ride a bicycle. Supplies needed include eye protection eyeglasses, sunglasses, goggles, or face shield; full-fingered gloves; over-the-ankle boots; long pants; long-sleeved shirt or jacket; and a N.C. Department of Transportation-approved helmet (some are provided). Motorcycles are provided.

A hands-on beginning cake decorating class, teaching techniques of learning how to make professionally decorated cakes. Students focus on basic skills and techniques used by cake decorators such as cake baking, torting, cake layer-leveling, making and applying buttercream icing and flowers; basic fondant work, and assembling and decorating a simple buttercream wedding cake.
